Brazilians say that God made the rest of the world in six days, and devoted the seventh to Rio. The jagged Sugarloaf rises from dark blue Guanabara Bay, with legendary beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema in the foreground, forested mountains behind. This great city has an enticing atmosphere of samba and fun, and its locals are as joyous as they are beautiful.

Buzios

10/31/2017 6:00:00 PM

This picturesque fishing village on the Costa del Sol was "discovered" by Brigitte Bardot in the '60s. Buzios boasts 23 white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and a verdant landscape. A town of many charms, Buzios is also known for fashionable shopping along the Rua das Pedras, or street of stones.

Ilha Grande
11/1/2017 8:00:00 AM
11/1/2017 6:00:00 PM

This island off the southern coast offers the best of tropical Brazil in one compact area (300 km sq). Ilha Grande offers more than a hundred pristine beaches, a extensive network of hiking trails through its lush interior rainforest, and rumors of buried pirate treasure. Especially recommended is the trek to the ghost town of Praia da Parnaioca, once a fishing village.

Parati
11/2/2017 8:00:00 AM
11/2/2017 6:00:00 PM

The entire city of Parati (Paraty) is considered a national monument as it was deemed by UNESCO to be one of the world’s most illustrious examples of Portuguese colonial architecture. A virtual museum within a tropical paradise, it is located southeast of Rio de Janeiro. The streets are lined with beautifully whitewashed buildings and many have colorfully painted trim. Motorized vehicles are forbidden on the majority of the narrow, cobblestone streets, so you can wander freely, absorbed in the tranquility and meticulously preserved architecture. Highlights of this quaint city include numerous churches, in particular the Portuguese Baroque-style Church of Santa Rita, built around 1720. Once all of the city’s beauty is explored, take some time out for a leisurely stroll along the shore or dine at any of the waterfront restaurants serving locally caught fish. There are also several shops in the historic area catering to local artisans and merchants.

Santos (São Paulo)
11/3/2017 8:00:00 AM
11/3/2017 6:00:00 PM

The leading port of Brazil and outlet to the sea for São Paulo, the largest city of the country, Santos is a great center of the coffee trade. A prominent building in the city is the Coffee Exchange. Popular seaside resorts are in the area. Founded in 1543, Santos became a major port when the railway from the interior was completed in 1867.
Santos itself, located 45 mi/70 km southeast of Sao Paulo, is Brazil's leading commercial port - both Santos and next-door neighbor Guaruja afford a wide range of nice beaches and boat tours.

Porto Belo
11/4/2017 9:00:00 AM
11/4/2017 6:00:00 PM

Famous for the Praia de Bombas and Praia Bombinhas beaches, Porto Belo attracts visitors who are eager for lazy days at the beach. If lounging is on your list, the beaches are excellent for swimming and sunbathing or for the more active traveler, there are a number of water sports to choose from. Sightseeing opportunities in the area include exploring surrounding islands, local towns such as Blumenau- Brazil’s German town and hiking in tropical forests around Porto Belo.

Rio Grande Do Sul
11/6/2017 8:00:00 AM
11/6/2017 4:00:00 PM

Rio Grande Do Sul has always been fiercely independent. Being Brazil’s southernmost state, it was well beyond the central government’s rule during colonial times, giving rise to the fabled gaúcho, who fearlessly roamed the land, living as he pleased. Men in small villages still dress like traditional gaúchos, and horsemanship is revered and often displayed in rodeos. The countryside is as big and beautiful as it is diverse. The pampas fan out in every direction, seemingly forever. The 300-mile coast is all magnificent beach, dotted with chic resorts. Alpine villages nestle in the mountains, the handiwork of German immigrants who settled here in the mid-1800s. The Italians soon followed, starting what has become one of Brazil’s premier wine-producing regions. Rio Grande Do Sol even boasts Latin America’s only Tibetan Buddhist temple complex, located near the village of Três Coroas.

Punta del Este
11/7/2017 9:00:00 AM
11/7/2017 6:00:00 PM

Punta del Este is a beautiful beach resort in Uruguay, perhaps the best known and most fashionable in South America. It spreads along a peninsula that juts out in the Atlantic Ocean with endless beaches of the most varied kinds. Its deep blue ocean, sand dunes, spectacular houses and gardens, good hotel infrastructure, marina and harbour, international airport, museums and art galleries, as well as a great setting to practice yachting, sailing, golf, polo and fishing, make Punta del Este the ideal place for a vacation. The area also boasts sophisticated shops, excellent restaurants, night-clubs and a luxurious casino. Worthwhile day trips include the laid back village of José Ignacio, with beautiful beaches and striking sunsets, La Pedrera with its dramatic seaside cliffs, or Laguna de Rocha, a National Park with abundant wildlife, or even Cabo Polonio, a nostalgic seaside fishing village tucked into the sand dunes along the ocean which can only be reached by horse-carriage or 4WD vehicles.

Montevideo
Suggested Private Excursion
11/8/2017 8:00:00 AM
11/8/2017 7:00:00 PM

Slightly threadbare and charmingly out of date, Montevideo harks back to pre-war days when it was the "Switzerland of South America." Art deco and art nouveau façades reflect this flourishing past, while the impressive Plaza Independencia, with its colonnades and open-air cafés, is a perfect place to savor the present.
